Blanchards Restaurant: Meads Bay's Fine-Dining Institution
Chef Melinda Blanchard's 30-year love letter to Caribbean flavor, served just steps from the sand on Anguilla's prettiest beach.
Why Go
Some restaurants feed you; Blanchards romances you. Opened in 1994 by Bob and Melinda Blanchard after they left Vermont chasing a wilder life, this Meads Bay landmark has quietly become the reason serious eaters put Anguilla on their map. Tropical-teal shutters swing open to the trade winds, ceiling fans spin lazily overhead, and a menu that reads like a passport (Provençal, Moroccan, Caribbean, Asian) is somehow pulled off with the confidence of a chef who has literally written the cookbook on it.
The Experience
Arrive just before sunset. The dining room is candle-lit and airy rather than stuffy ΓÇö think white linen with barefoot elegance ΓÇö and the service is the warm, remember-your-name kind that comes from a family-run house that has been doing this for three decades. Order a rum punch at the bar first, then slide into a table where the breeze carries in the sound of Meads Bay surf. The wine list is genuinely impressive for a Caribbean island (Bob is the sommelier), and the pacing lets a two-hour dinner feel like an event rather than a transaction. This is a special-occasion spot for most visitors, and it dresses that way ΓÇö resort-casual, no shorts at dinner.
What to Try
The Caribbean Sampler is the classic starter and the smart way to taste the kitchen's range in one plate. For mains, the Sesame-Crusted Grouper and Moroccan Fish Tagine are perennial favorites that show off how far the kitchen ranges from typical island fare, while the Pan-Seared Tenderloin of Beef is the go-to for meat-eaters. Save room for the cracked coconut dessert ΓÇö it's been on the menu since the '90s for a reason. If you're a vegetarian, the Cauliflower Steak is treated with the same seriousness as everything else, which is rarer than it should be in the Caribbean.
Insider Tip
If Blanchards proper feels like too much of a splurge (dinner entrees run high), walk 30 seconds next door to Blanchards Beach Shack ΓÇö same family, same kitchen ethos, but picnic tables in the sand, lobster rolls, rum punches, and a bill roughly a third of the size. Locals and repeat visitors often do Shack for lunch and save the main restaurant for one big dinner. Also: reservations for the restaurant should be made well in advance during high season (DecemberΓÇôApril) ΓÇö a walk-in on a Friday in February is a lost cause.
The Practical Stuff
Meads Bay, West End, Anguilla. Open for lunch and dinner, roughly 11:30amΓÇô8pm Monday through Saturday; closed Sundays. Hours shift seasonally and the restaurant typically closes for part of the low season (usually late summer through early autumn), so confirm before you book. Reservations strongly recommended ΓÇö book through OpenTable or directly. Upscale price range. Beach Shack next door is walk-in friendly. Free parking on-site.
Pair It With
- Blanchards Beach Shack — The casual sister spot literally next door ΓÇö perfect for a barefoot lunch of lobster rolls and rum punches before your big dinner across the path.
- Meads Bay — Show up an hour early and walk the powder-white sand of one of Anguilla's most photographed beaches; it's the best possible aperitif.
- Straw Hat Restaurant — Also on Meads Bay and a natural alternate for a second fine-dining night ΓÇö different vibe (over-the-water deck) but a similarly serious kitchen.
