Anguilla's only Relais & Châteaux property doesn't feel like a hotel so much as a wealthy friend's estate on a private cove — one who happens to keep a Tuscan wine cellar, a curated art gallery, and a chef who spearfishes his own snapper before service.
The Experience
Built stone by stone over nearly a decade and opened in 2018, Quintessence is a deliberate homage to the original jet-set-era Malliouhana, reimagined as an intimate 12-key mansion on the bluff above Long Bay. Nine suites sit in the main house and three more in an adjacent villa, each with hand-crafted Hästens Swedish mattresses, Turkish marble baths, Roman soaking tubs, and Gilchrist & Soames amenities. Days drift between the infinity pool, the powder-soft crescent of Long Bay Beach below, and quiet corners of the property hung with international art from the owners' private collection. Service is old-school Relais & Châteaux — anticipatory, first-name, unhurried — and the whole place tops out at around two dozen guests, so you rarely see another face you don't already know.
What to Try
Book a table at Julian's, the on-site Tropical French Bistro led by Executive Chef Dominique Thévenet — his French-Caribbean tasting menu leans hard on line-caught local seafood (much of it he pulls from the water himself) and is routinely called the best meal on the island. Ask the sommelier to open the Tuscan cellar for a pre-dinner tour, take the private art walk with the on-property gallery curator, and don't miss a sunrise walk down to Long Bay before the beach staff has even set the loungers.
Insider Tip
The three suites in the adjacent villa are technically the same room category as the mansion suites but come with dramatically more privacy, a shared plunge pool, and easier direct beach access ΓÇö request the villa side at booking, not the main house, if seclusion matters more than being steps from Julian's. And if you're not staying overnight, Julian's takes outside dinner reservations; arrive 45 minutes early for a cocktail on the gazebo terrace at sunset.
