The Experience
Tucked into a gentle horseshoe on Anguilla's eastern coast, Sandy Hill Bay is the kind of beach that reminds you what 'undeveloped' actually feels like. The sand is squeaky-soft and blindingly white, the water shifts from clear to that impossible Anguilla turquoise, and an offshore reef tames the swell into a glassy swimming pool. You won't find a single vendor, a rented umbrella, or a Wi-Fi signal ΓÇö just fishermen pulling in traps at dawn, the occasional sailboat anchored in the lee, and a few in-the-know locals spreading blankets under the manchineel-free stretch at the north end. It's a proper 'bring everything, take everything' beach, and that's exactly the point.
What to Try
Snorkel the reef along the bay's southern arm ΓÇö it's shallow, calm, and full of parrotfish, sergeant majors, and the odd stingray gliding over the turtle grass. Walk the full crescent barefoot at low tide; it takes about 20 minutes end to end and you'll pass tide pools worth poking around in. Pack a picnic and claim the shady patch under the sea grapes on the north side. For the adventurous, kayaks launched from here can reach the tiny uninhabited cays just offshore.
Insider Tip
There's no parking lot and no signage ΓÇö the turnoff from Sandy Hill Road is easy to miss. Look for the small dirt track just past the fishing boats pulled up on the roadside; you can park along the shoulder. Come before 10 a.m. or after 3 p.m. for the softest light and the best chance of having the whole bay to yourself. Bring twice as much water as you think you need ΓÇö there is genuinely nothing here.
The Practical Stuff
Free public access, open sunrise to sunset. No facilities: no restrooms, no showers, no food or drink vendors, no chair rentals, no lifeguard. Cell service is spotty. Reef shoes helpful for the rockier southern end. About a 15-minute drive from The Valley; roads are paved but narrow. Leave no trace ΓÇö locals are protective of this one.
