Shoal Bay West

Anguilla's hushed, powder-sand hideaway with St. Martin on the horizon

Why Go

While day-trippers pile into Shoal Bay East, this two-mile ribbon on Anguilla's western tip stays gloriously empty ΓÇö the kind of beach where your own footprints are usually the only ones you'll cross all afternoon.

The Experience

Shoal Bay West is what people mean when they say 'undiscovered Caribbean.' The sand is that squeaky, sugar-white stuff you'd swear was imported, the water shades from glass-clear to deep turquoise, and the whole crescent points straight across the channel toward the green hills of St. Martin. There's no beach bar strip, no jet-ski rental hut, no vendors ΓÇö just a handful of low-slung villas set well back from the shore and one very good Italian restaurant. Come at sunset and the whole bay turns molten. Come midday and you'll likely have a quarter-mile of beach entirely to yourself.

What to Try

Swim the calm, protected shallows on the eastern end, then walk west along the shore — the farther you go, the more solitary it gets. Snorkelers should head out toward Blowing Rock, a small volcanic outcrop offshore where parrotfish, sergeant majors, and the occasional turtle patrol the coral. Bring your own gear (there are no rentals here). Time a long lunch at Trattoria Tramonto so you can roll straight from house-made pasta and a glass of rosé onto a sun lounger. And don't skip a sunset walk — the west-facing angle makes this one of the best golden-hour beaches on the island.

Insider Tip

There's no public parking lot and no signage announcing the beach ΓÇö the access is a short, easy-to-miss path between villa driveways off Cove Road. Park on the road shoulder, walk in, and pick a spot as far west as your feet will carry you; the crowd (such as it is) clusters near the restaurant. Also: no shade trees and no beach shack selling cold drinks, so pack a cooler and reef-safe sunscreen before you leave your villa.

The Practical Stuff

Free to visit, open daylight hours, no lifeguards. Roughly a 15ΓÇô20 minute drive from Blowing Point Ferry Terminal and about 25 minutes from Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport ΓÇö a taxi is the easiest option if you don't have a rental car. Restrooms are only available if you're dining at Trattoria Tramonto. Calm conditions most of the year, but the west end can get breezier and choppier in winter.

Pair It With

  • Trattoria Tramonto — The only restaurant directly on Shoal Bay West ΓÇö authentic Italian lunches and sunset dinners just steps from the sand.
  • Cove Bay — A neighboring long, quiet beach five minutes away, with Smokey's at the Cove for casual beach-shack bites and rum punches.
  • Meads Bay — When you're ready for a livelier scene, this nearby beach has restaurants, resorts, and the famous Sunday jazz brunch at Blanchards.
  • Blowing Rock snorkel spot — The offshore rock formation off Shoal Bay West's western end is the reason to pack your mask ΓÇö coral heads and reef fish in easy swimming distance.
