Tucked into the powder-white curve of Barnes Bay at Four Seasons Resort Anguilla, The Half Shell is the island's answer to the perfect midday pause: toes in the sand, turquoise water fizzing a few steps away, and a rum punch sweating in your hand before you've even opened the menu.
The Experience
This is beach-club dining stripped of pretension. Sun loungers give way to a shaded, open-air pavilion where the trade winds do most of the air-conditioning. Order at the counter or from a barefoot server, then drift between your chaise and the bar as the afternoon melts on. The soundtrack is a mix of soft reggae and the surf on Barnes Bay - one of Anguilla's most photogenic beaches, and one of the few where the resort welcomes non-guests to eat and drink. Expect a friendly, low-key crowd of Four Seasons villa dwellers, day-trippers who've wised up, and the occasional celebrity trying (and failing) to be incognito behind oversized sunglasses.
What to Try
Anything off the raw bar - the name is a promise, so start with a half-dozen local oysters or a ceviche while you decide. The lobster roll is the sleeper hit: warm butter, sweet Anguillian spiny lobster, a toasted brioche bun. Grilled mahi tacos and the Caribbean jerk chicken sandwich round out the savory side, and the salads (kale-quinoa, watermelon-feta) genuinely earn their keep on a hot day. To drink: the frozen painkiller is the house pour, but ask the bartender for whatever local rum they're obsessed with that week.

You don't need to be staying at the Four Seasons to eat here, but you do need to look the part - arrive by 12:15 to snag a shaded table before the lunch rush, then linger for a swim between courses. Cash or resort charge only for loungers; the food and drinks go on a regular card. If you're driving in, tell the gate you're headed to The Half Shell for lunch and they'll wave you through to the beach lot.

- Meads Bay — A five-minute drive east, this longer stretch of sand is home to sunset spots like Blanchards and Straw Hat if you want to turn a Half Shell lunch into a full west-end day.
- Sandy Ground — Head here after 6 PM for live music, rum shacks, and the island's best casual dinner scene - the natural nightcap to a lazy Barnes Bay afternoon.
- Shoal Bay East — If you loved the beach-bar formula, drive across the island the next day to Gwen's Reggae Grill or Uncle Ernie's for the more rustic, local-run version of the same idea.
