Why Go
When day-trippers pile into Lower Shoal Bay's beach bars, walk east. The crowds thin, the sand narrows to a ribbon between sea grape and turquoise water, and suddenly you have one of the Caribbean's most photographed shorelines nearly to yourself.
The Experience
Upper Shoal Bay is the wilder, more secluded flank of the two-mile Shoal Bay East stretch on Anguilla's north coast. The powdery white sand here is just as blindingly bright as the busier western end, but the vibe is dramatically different ΓÇö no thumping music, no packed loungers, just the shush of small waves and the occasional snorkeler drifting over the reef. In places the sea has nibbled the shoreline down to a narrow walking path that can wash out at high tide, which is part of the charm: this is a working stretch of coast, not a manicured resort beach. Bring reef shoes for the rockier patches, a mask for the shallow coral gardens just offshore, and enough water and shade to last the afternoon. Sunsets glow pink across the water toward Scilly Cay and Island Harbour in the distance.
What to Try
Snorkel the reef fingers that run parallel to shore ΓÇö parrotfish, sergeant majors, and the occasional stingray are regulars in water shallow enough to stand in. Walk the full length of the beach from Upper down to Lower Shoal Bay (about 30ΓÇô40 minutes each way) for a genuine sense of scale. Pack a picnic and claim one of the shaded sea-grape spots the locals use; there are no vendors at this end. If you time it right, morning light on the water here is unmatched for photos.
Insider Tip
Skip the crowded Lower Shoal Bay parking lot and enter from the east ΓÇö there's a small free lot near the Upper end where you can park in seconds. Come mid-week and before 10 a.m. or after 3 p.m. and you'll often have long stretches to yourself. And check the tide before you go: at high tide with any northerly swell, the walking path pinches to almost nothing and the swim becomes choppier than the postcard versions suggest.
The Practical Stuff
Free parking (small lot, arrive early on weekends). No lifeguards on duty. Basic bathroom and shower facilities available. No dogs allowed on the beach. No dedicated beach bar at the Upper end ΓÇö walk west to Lower Shoal Bay for food and drinks at spots like Madeariman or Tropical Sunset. Bring water, reef-safe sunscreen, and shade; there's very little natural cover. Cell signal is reliable. Best conditions NovemberΓÇôJuly; late summer can bring seaweed and swell.
