Villa Coyaba: A Six-Bedroom Slice of Arawak Heaven on Anguilla's South Coast

A 9,000 sq ft private villa in Lockrum Bay where 'Coyaba' ΓÇö the Arawak word for heaven ΓÇö actually earns its name.

Why Go

Perched above the rugged southern coastline with the peaks of St. Martin shimmering across the channel, Villa Coyaba is what happens when a full-service resort shrinks down to fit one family (or twelve friends). Six bedrooms, a freshwater pool with a waterfall splash-over, a real gym, a game room, and a footpath down to a hidden pocket of sand ΓÇö all yours, no lobby, no strangers, no dress code past a wet swimsuit.

The Experience

Days here have a rhythm you set yourself. Mornings tend to start on the 3,000 sq ft pool terrace with coffee and that long, quiet view over the Anguilla Channel to St. Martin's green mountains. The villa is deliberately isolated in Lockrum ΓÇö five minutes from the Blowing Point ferry terminal but a world away from the traffic of Sandy Ground or the buzz of Meads Bay ΓÇö so what you get is silence broken only by tree frogs, the surf below the cliff, and whatever's coming off the outdoor speakers. Groups tend to split naturally: some drift down the short trail to the tiny cove beach tucked beneath the property (bring reef shoes, this is Anguilla's wild south side, not a raked resort strand), others colonize the whirlpool, and someone inevitably claims the gym or the game room. Evenings are for the terrace grill, sunset behind Blowing Point, and the lights of Marigot flickering on across the water. It's a house built for the kind of trip where you cook one night, hire a private chef the next, and take the rental car out to Scilly Cay or Da'Vida for lunch.

What to Try

Book a private chef for at least one dinner on the pool terrace ΓÇö the kitchen is fully outfitted and the sunset backdrop over St. Martin is the whole point of being on this side of the island. Walk the path down to the secluded cove beach at low tide (it disappears at high). Rent a small boat from nearby Blowing Point and day-trip to Sandy Island or across to Marigot for the Wednesday and Saturday market. Use the gym ΓÇö most Anguilla villas don't have one, and this one is legitimately equipped. And do at least one leisurely lunch at Straw Hat or Veya, both a short drive north.

Insider Tip

Lockrum's south-coast setting means the surf directly below the villa can be rough and the on-site cove is more scenic-swim than swim-all-day. For proper turquoise-flat Anguilla beach days, plan on a 15ΓÇô20 minute drive over to Rendezvous Bay, Meads, or Shoal Bay East ΓÇö so make sure you've arranged a rental car (or a driver on call) before you arrive. The ferry from Blowing Point is a five-minute hop, which makes SXM airport in St. Martin the smarter arrival point than Anguilla's own airport for most transatlantic itineraries.

The Practical Stuff

Location: Lockrum Bay, southern coast of Anguilla, roughly 5 minutes' drive from the Blowing Point ferry terminal and about 20 minutes from Clayton J. Lloyd International (AXA). Size: 6 bedrooms, sleeps up to 12, ~9,000 sq ft of interior living space plus a 3,000 sq ft pool and terrace. Features: freshwater pool, whirlpool with waterfall, gym, game room, high-speed internet, cable TV throughout, fully equipped kitchen. Suits families, multi-couple groups, milestone celebrations, and small private events. Booked as a full-villa luxury rental ΓÇö check with the villa's management or a specialist agent for current weekly rates, minimum-stay requirements (typically 5ΓÇô7 nights, longer over holidays), and staffing options (housekeeping, chef, driver).

Pair It With

  • Blowing Point Ferry Terminal — Five minutes from the villa and the fastest way to hop over to St. Martin for a day of shopping in Marigot or dinner in Grand Case.
  • Rendezvous Bay — The nearest of Anguilla's long, powder-white swimming beaches ΓÇö a short drive from Lockrum and home to easygoing lunch spots like the Sunshine Shack.
  • Straw Hat Restaurant — Beachfront dining at Frangipani Beach Club on Meads Bay ΓÇö an easy 20-minute drive and one of Anguilla's most reliable date-night rooms.
  • Scilly Cay Guide — A tiny private island off Island Harbour reached by a two-minute skiff; the grilled lobster lunch is a rite of passage on any Anguilla trip.
  • Sandy Island — A speck of sand and palm trees off Sandy Ground with a beach bar and clear water ΓÇö the perfect half-day boat outing from the villa.
