Why Go

Perched on a windswept bluff above Anse de Toiny six kilometers east of Gustavia, this 22-suite estate feels less like a hotel and more like a private hamlet — Range Rover Defenders ferry guests down to the surf-side Beach Club, and the rest of the buzzy island stays comfortably out of earshot.

The Experience

Le Toiny is the antithesis of a resort. Spread across 42 acres of hibiscus-draped hillside, its plantation-style villas are set far enough apart that you can spend a week here and never see another guest at your infinity-edge pool. Interiors nod to a chic French country home — bleached teak, linen slipcovers, canopy beds — while terraces open straight onto the wild Atlantic. Days settle into a slow rhythm: espresso from the in-suite Nespresso, a Range Rover shuttle down to the Beach Club for a long lunch under the sea-grape trees, then back up the hill for a spa treatment delivered to your villa. Service is the property's real signature — hands-on, first-name, and quietly anticipatory in a way that only a small, family-run operation can pull off.

What to Try

Book a table at Restaurant Le Gaiac for a long, ocean-view dinner (the Mediterranean-leaning tasting menu and 300-plus-label cellar are the island's most understated fine-dining pairing). Down at the Beach Club, order the tuna tataki and a bottle of rosé, then rent a board from the surf shack — Toiny is one of the island's best breaks for intermediates. Back at your villa, request an in-suite couples massage on your private terrace rather than trekking to the spa cottage; it's the same therapists, twice the intimacy.

Insider Tip

The Beach Club's cove looks tempting but the current is real — it's a surfer's beach, not a swimmer's. Use the Beach Club's dedicated infinity pool for actual dips, and if you want to swim in the sea, ask the concierge to arrange a car to Gouverneur or Saline (about 20 minutes west). Also worth knowing: the smallest 'Ocean Suite' category is 925 sq ft with its own pool — there's genuinely no bad room, so don't overspend on a category upgrade unless you want a second bedroom.

The Practical Stuff

Address: Anse de Toiny, 97133 St Barthélemy. About 15 minutes by car from Gustavia and 20 minutes from Rémy de Haenen Airport (SBH); the hotel will collect you. Open seasonally — the property typically closes late August through mid-October for the low season. Complimentary Wi-Fi, breakfast, and parking; kitchenettes in every suite. A rental car is useful but not essential thanks to the on-demand Range Rover shuttle. Reserve Le Gaiac and spa treatments well before arrival in high season (December–February).
